Son of Deception began with a single Dungeons and Dragons character sheet. I wanted to try making something new, and once I’d finished filling out all the other details on the paper, I needed to come up with a name. I asked this character what he wanted to be called. What was a name that embodied what he loved, and who he was? He whispered back. I’m Book.
Book quickly outgrew his humble beginnings. He took on life inside my mind. I began writing his stories as they came to me. His origins, his world, his adventures. Slowly, more characters began to emerge. His family, his friends. The Paladin of Justice who would share this big mission with him. I’ve always been a writer, but for most of my life, writing was just a hobby. My stories were only shared with a few close friends. But as I wrote more about Book, I noticed something was different about his story.
I was onto something good. Something people might enjoy reading. A story worth sharing.
So, I kept writing. Son of Deception became my passion and obsession. Over the eighteen months it took to write this book, I had to overcome many challenges. 2021 was a time of uncertainty, staying in isolation with no end in sight. I suffered losses that I feared I would never heal from. But not all surprises were unwelcome; a few months into the writing process I learned I was expecting my fourth child. Also, during this time, we moved across the county. During all those big changes, writing this book became my anchor and escape.
I am so very, very pleased to share Book and Alyric’s story with the world now.
The second book in this series, The Whiteleaf Child is set for release in March 2023.
